Planning your first trip to Salento? Get ready to discover two seas, historic towns, charming villages, Mediterranean cuisine and a region with so much to explore.
Perhaps you’ve already seen pictures of turquoise waters and beautiful sandy beaches. But where should you stay? Do you need a rental car? Which places are really worth visiting? And how can you plan your holiday without spending hours in the car every day?
I’ve known Salento since childhood and have been living here since 2019. With this guide, I’d like to help you plan your first visit. And if you’d rather not organise everything yourself, I can personally help you choose, arrange and book suitable services through Salento Reisen.
1. Where exactly is Salento?
Salento forms the southern part of Puglia, the heel of Italy’s boot. The Adriatic Sea lies to the east and the Ionian Sea to the west. Between the two coasts, you’ll discover historic towns, olive groves, small villages and landscapes that change with the seasons.
One of the region’s most appealing features is its varied coastline. Some areas have long sandy beaches, while others offer rocky coves, small harbours and spectacular sea views.
2. Which beaches should you visit first?
If you’re visiting Salento for the first time, you’ll probably want to discover some of its beautiful beaches. Here are three very different places to consider:
- Torre Mozza: A seaside village on the Ionian coast with a sandy beach, ideal for relaxing days by the sea.
- Torre San Giovanni – the southern beach area near Lido Fontanelle: A beautiful stretch of the Ionian coastline with pale sand and often turquoise water. Personally, I consider it one of the loveliest beaches in this area and recommend it to anyone visiting Salento for the first time.
- Porto Selvaggio: A protected natural area with a rocky coastline and a bay reached on foot. Comfortable footwear and a willingness to walk are recommended.
My tip: In July and August, it’s worth arriving at popular beaches early in the morning. And remember, not every beach is equally pleasant in every wind direction. Depending on the weather, it may be better to choose the Ionian or Adriatic coast.
If you’d like to explore different stretches of coastline, I can also create a personalised day trip for you through Salento Reisen. You’ll receive an itinerary tailored to your interests, which you can explore independently at your own pace.
3. Which towns and villages should you discover?
Alongside its beaches, Salento’s historic towns and smaller villages are among the region’s greatest attractions. For your first visit, I particularly recommend these five places:
- Lecce: Famous for its Baroque façades, churches and squares. A walk through the historic centre is especially rewarding if you enjoy architecture and history.
- Gallipoli: The historic old town stands on an island connected to the mainland by a bridge. Here, narrow streets, harbour life and the sea come together.
- Otranto: A town on the Adriatic coast with an impressive cathedral, a charming historic centre and beautiful views of the sea.
- Presicce: Recognised as one of I Borghi più belli d’Italia, Italy’s most beautiful villages. With its winding streets, historic noble palaces and underground olive oil mills (frantoi ipogei), Presicce offers a fascinating glimpse into Salento’s history.
- Specchia: Also recognised as one of I Borghi più belli d’Italia. This historic village charms visitors with narrow stone streets, beautifully preserved buildings and a special atmosphere. It’s ideal for a leisurely walk through the authentic Salento countryside.
My tip: Don’t try to visit all these places in a single day. It’s much nicer to take your time for a stroll, a coffee or a relaxed lunch.
I’d be happy to plan a day trip or an itinerary that allows you to discover several interesting places without spending the whole day driving. Smaller inland villages such as Presicce and Specchia can also be combined beautifully in a personalised route.
4. What should you definitely try in Salento?
Salento’s cuisine is closely connected to the region’s history and local produce. Many dishes are simple, but that simplicity is often what makes them so delicious.
- Pasticciotto: A traditional sweet shortcrust pastry, usually filled with pastry cream. Especially popular for breakfast or with a coffee.
- Frisella: Twice-baked bread that’s briefly moistened with water before being topped. Particularly delicious with tomatoes, olive oil and oregano.
- Puccia: A traditional local bread that can be filled with a variety of ingredients.
- Orecchiette: These little ear-shaped pasta pieces are among Puglia’s best-known specialities.
- Fresh fish and seafood: Especially in coastal towns, you’ll find plenty of dishes inspired by the region’s maritime traditions.
My tip: When eating out, ask about the daily specials and traditional local dishes. The most interesting choices aren’t always on the first page of the menu.
Would you like to enjoy a wine tasting, meet local producers or dine at a restaurant that suits your preferences? I can also arrange culinary experiences and restaurant reservations on request, depending on my partners’ offers and availability.
5. Where should you stay in Salento?
This is an especially important decision if you’re visiting the region for the first time. Salento is larger than it may appear on a map, and not every property is conveniently located for the holiday you have in mind.
You could stay in a seaside hotel, a small Bed & Breakfast, a holiday apartment, a holiday home or a traditional masseria.
If you’re mainly planning a beach holiday, accommodation near the coast might be ideal. If you’d rather spend your time exploring, a well-located town or village inland could also be a good choice.
My tip: Don’t choose your accommodation based on photographs alone. Think about how you’d like to spend your days and whether you want to be able to walk to restaurants and shops in the evening.
You can book your accommodation directly through me. I work with a network of accommodation partners throughout Salento and can recommend different places to stay. Simply tell me your travel dates, the number of guests, your budget and your preferences. I’ll check suitable offers and availability, discuss the options with you and, once you’ve made your decision, handle the booking through Salento Reisen.
6. Do you need a rental car?
If you’d like to explore several beaches, towns and small villages, having a car is usually the most practical way to travel around Salento. Public transport is available, but smaller villages and certain coastal areas aren’t always easy to reach.
The time of year also matters, as some transport services mainly operate during the summer season.
My tip: Plan your excursions by area. This helps you avoid unnecessarily long drives and gives you more time to enjoy the places you visit.
If you need a rental car, I’ll be happy to help you arrange one through my local rental partner. That way, you can coordinate your accommodation, transport and excursions more easily.
7. What experiences are worth trying beyond beaches and towns?
Salento offers much more than beach holidays. Often, it’s the smaller experiences that make a trip especially memorable and varied.
- Weekly markets: Discover regional products and experience a little of everyday life in Salento.
- Wine tastings: Learn about local grape varieties and meet the people behind the region’s wines.
- Boat trips: Discover the coastline from a different perspective, depending on the weather and seasonal availability.
- Village festivals and sagre: Especially during the warmer months, many villages host events celebrating local food, music and traditions.
- Nature and walking: Coastal paths, nature parks and the rural countryside invite you to discover the quieter side of the region.
You can also contact me through Salento Reisen to arrange boat trips, wine tastings and other experiences. I’ll check with my partners to see which options are available during your stay and which best suit your interests.
8. When is the best time for your first holiday in Salento?
That depends on what you’d like to experience. July and August are particularly busy along the most popular stretches of coastline. Visitors who prefer a beach holiday with slightly fewer crowds often choose June or September, although good weather can never be guaranteed.
Spring and autumn are especially suitable for excursions, walks and cultural discoveries. Salento also has its charms in winter, although some tourist services and accommodation providers are closed during the quieter months.
My tip: First, think about what matters most to you. The best time for a beach holiday isn’t necessarily the best time for a sightseeing trip or a peaceful stay in the countryside.
9. Your first trip to Salento – let me help you organise it
Planning your first visit often brings up plenty of questions: Which town should you choose? Where can you find lovely accommodation? Do you need a car? Which excursions work well together?
You don’t have to figure everything out on your own. Through Salento Reisen, I can personally help you plan a stay that reflects your interests and preferences.
I can recommend suitable accommodation from my network of partners and handle the booking, arrange a rental car through my local partner, create personalised day trips and enquire about or organise boat trips, wine tastings, restaurant reservations and other experiences for you.
We’ll discuss which services make sense for your holiday. The available options depend on your preferences, travel dates and my partners’ availability and booking conditions.
My aim is to help you discover Salento beyond the photographs and experience it in your own way, with the support of someone who lives here and knows the region through everyday life.
